Who says praise choruses can’t have substance?
January 13, 2008 on 1:09 pm | In Hymns/Worship |Oh God, most High, almighty King
The Champion of Heaven, Lord of everything
You fought, You won, death lost its sting
And standing in Your victory we sing
You have broken the chains
That held our captive souls
You have broken the chains
And used them on Your foes
All Your enemies are bound
They tremble at the sound of Your Name
Jesus, You have broken the chains
The pow’r of hell has been undone
Captivity held captive by the Risen One
And in the name of God’s great Son
We thank You for the victory You’ve won
You have broken the chains
That held our captive souls
You have broken the chains
And used them on Your foes
All Your enemies are bound
They tremble at the sound of Your Name
Jesus, You have broken the chains
Jesus, You have broken the chains
Jesus, You have broken the chains
“You Have Broken The Chains”

“Who says praise choruses can’t have substance?”
I might have said that before, but I hardly meant it to really mean ALL praise choruses.

I was primarily referring to things that I’ve heard other Lutherans say.
Unfortunately they are right a lot of the time.

I agree, they are right a lot of times but there are contemporary songs out there that do have some good theology, though at this time rare. We can not generalize.
Some people in Evangelia are waking up. Where I am I have seen and even sang contemporary hymns written by Lutherans and Presbyterians that are Christ centered and Cross focused. They are a drop in the bucket but oh so precious and refreshing when you find them.

I sang that song in the mid-90s. I know the tune. It has no decent *musical* substance.
